I am writing to express my strong opposition to the plan that would effectively force millions of company directors into a compulsory digital ID system through GOV.UK One Login.I note that Companies House has recently started to say this “isn’t a digital ID.” But if we must prove our identity through the One Login app, upload a passport or driving licence, and receive a persistent digital code linking us to our company record, this is a state-controlled digital ID by any common-sense definition.The British public has consistently rejected compulsory ID schemes - and no political party has ever sought a mandate to introduce one. It is unacceptable that such a system is now being brought in by the back door, hidden inside company law reforms.Company directors already have safe, proven ways to prove their identity. There is no justification for coercing them into a risky, centralised digital identity system.I am also deeply concerned that this plan depends on the Government’s troubled One Login system — already branded “Post Office Horizon all over again.” This project has been plagued by serious failings:<ul><li>An exercise revealed that the One Login system may already have been compromised without detection and potentially contain malware; internal staff were reportedly given unrestricted access without proper vetting.</li><li>Sensitive work was outsourced overseas, including to Romania, a known cyber-crime hotspot.</li><li>Whistleblowers who raised legitimate concerns were reportedly silenced.</li><li>The system even lost its trust-framework certification, casting doubt on its compliance and security.</li></ul>Despite these failures, more than £300 million of taxpayers’ money has already been poured into One Login — with little transparency or accountability. The UK’s record on digital ID schemes is dire, from the failed national ID cards of the 2000s (scrapped at a cost of up to £20 billion) to numerous abandoned IT projects.Forcing millions of directors to verify through this unproven system is reckless and disproportionate. It increases the risk of data breaches, identity theft, and government mission creep.I urge Companies House to halt this rollout and retain existing, secure identity-verification methods. Any move toward digital ID must be subject to open public consultation, parliamentary debate, and full legislative scrutiny — not quietly imposed on small business owners who keep Britain’s economy running.
